Analysing 3 Teaser Trailers

In this post I will be analysing three different teaser trailers within the genre horror, I will be focusing on mise en scene, location and camera angles. This will help inspire me on a storyline and it will help me to look for ideas of what to include within my teaser trailer.

This is a trailer of Dark Hollows. It is a 54 second long trailer. This gives the audience small snippets of the film and intrigues the viewer to go and watch the film in cinema. In this trailer they have only used non-diegetic sound; it is very high pitched which sounds mystical, then changing into a slower paced while increasing pace as the scene goes on. There is a deeper pitched music at 21 seconds after a roaring sound making it sound haunting and scary. Both of these sounds create an edgy atmosphere. there is no dialogue within the trailer which creates mystery. The location of the trailer is in two places the first on is a field where it is very bright and somewhat summery and warm, and the second location is in a forest where the lighting is dark and connotes a cold feeling this shows contrast, both locations are deserted creating a sense of vulnerability for the girl within the trailer, this has inspired me to use a deserted location where I can create an eerie atmosphere. The lighting has shown me how significant it is in creating a particular feel. The camera work is similar and simple the whole way through the trailer. They have used the same shot angle throughout the trailer and they is no variety in height but they have used different variations of close up shots and they have also used a tracking shot as they are following/walking through the forest. It starts at a fast pace but it slows down as they slow down in the forest. At the end of the trailer there isn't a date telling you when the film is going to be realised so it leaves to watchers in suspense.

This is a trailer of sinister. It is 46 seconds long. At the start of the trailer there is a voice over explaining the origin of the story, I feel that this is good for the trailer as the viewer’s get an insight to the storyline before the trailer has even begun. In this trailer they both diegetic and non-diegetic sound. They have used this to their advantage as they over lapped both music and dialogue to create tension and suspense. The non-diegetic sound has the power to change your emotions within seconds the non-diegetic sound cuts over sharply. The diegetic sound consists mainly of children talking to each other; this adds an aspect of creepiness as children are used in many scary films to add the element of scariness. The location of this trailer is set in a house it is only within the one place showing that the house is somewhat significant to the storyline. There is no variation of place within this trailer this has a good effect on the audience as it has consistency and allows the viewer to be drawn into the trailer. There is hand held footage allowing it to seem realistic as they look like old home movies from the killers point of view, giving it an authentic feel. Most of the camera shots used are mid shots with a few zooms and close ups, this allows the viewer to see enough  of the shot but not giving too much away.

This is a trailer for The Pact, it is 1 minute 52 seconds long this is quite long for a teaser trailer so we will be making one a bit shorter. In this trailer they use text to explain the story and there is also text on reviews explain how it made them feel, for example 'nail bitingly scary'. In this trailer they use both diegetic and non-diegetic sound, they use non-diegetic sound to incorporate glitches into the trailer this is effective as it allows them to add snippets of different parts of the film, it also adds a sense of tension, the diegetic sound at the beginning is mainly the young girl talking some films use this as children are portrayed as innocent and when they see something creepy they will tell someone as the believe what they see is true, this adds the element of creepiness to the trailer. The rest of the diegetic sound is adults talking and there is a part where there is screaming which adds an atmosphere to the trailer. The location is continuous throughout the whole of the trailer implying the house has some significance to what has been having within the trailer. There is one scene where she is riding a motorbike but that has no significance to the trailer, by using only one location this add an element of scariness whenever you next see that house. All of the camera shots have been done by using a tripod. There is a tracking shot as she is walking through the house at the beginning, there are close ups on significant things that are happening throughout the trailer these include door handles and the ouija, these imply that these objects mean something to the story, they use a mixture of low and high angles which this trailer, they also use panning shots withing this trailer.

  1. Good choice of material but more detailed analysis - in particular of mise en scene ( and you should use the term). For example, in the 'Sinister' trailer, there is a huge amount of material not commented on.
Be analytical too - you comment that children are often used in horror films. Why might this be? Or why might it be particularly disturbing for people to suffer/ be victims in their homes. How is the audience being positioned?
