3rd Trailer Draft

Feedback:
Improvements that we need to make are that some of the scenes are too light so we will be darkening them, we are still having trouble with the sound so we are trying to get that working, and some of the scenes are too long so we are going to shorten them.

Magazine

For our magazine we are currently deciding our layout and logo, we have decided to merge text and image to make our magazine logo and we have decided to do this on photoshop or flash software to make the final logo, we will be using the audience feedback that we gathered from previous questionnaires for the font of the logo and we will be creating our own image for the background.

This is the font that people chose on the questionnaire.

So far for the logo I have created this and we will be finishing in and adding colours then using it within our magazine front cover.

From my magazine research I have found that we need to include puffs, tag lines, sell lines, mast head, barcode, main image as well as smaller images and text on our horror trailer magazine.

Final Logo;

Problems with Premiere Pro

While making our first trailer edit we encountered some problems with premiere pro, with these problems we was able to work around these and solve some of them. These included our trailer not plaiying on the premiere pro software so we had to create the rest of our trailer without being able to see it, we also had a problem with converting the file from the premiere pro file to a MPEG2 file as there was a pronblem with the software. We was able to fix this by looking on Google for answers.

We also have a problem with rednering the project, so we had to render the file on my home computer instead of completing it at school.

Horror Trailer No1

This is our first final edit of out trailer so far, we will be collecting reviews from peers, family and our target audience so that we have points that we can improve to make our trailer better.

Friday, 11 October 2013

Reviews of trailer so far

Rebecca Davis // Age 17

Positives
- Good editing
- Good camera work on the bag
- Mise en scene is good as the teenager is wearing stereotypical clothes for her age and so is the killer as in films they never show their faces/identities

Negatives
- Use a still image for the end image instead of a moving video as it takes away effect
- The colouring on the video needs to be darker

Jessica Harris // Age 17

Positive
- Camera work and positioning is good

Negatives
- Suggest that you take out the second walking clip so it flows better
- Have writing shown i.e. reviews/storyline

Survey No 2

We have decided to carry out a second survey to make a final decision on which magazine font we will be using, the survey only consists of one question. Below I will be uploading the results of the survey and I will also wbe uploading picture of the final font.

The results of the survey have shown that the most popular and most prefered font out of the two is the first font with a 68% result rating. So we will be using the first font on the front of our magazine.

My Poll

We decided to use a poll to get some feedback on what people would like the magazine font title to be on the front of our magazine cover. From the poll we have got the following results;

From this poll I have come to the conclusion that the 2 most popular fonts are the forth font and the seventh font. Now that I have this information I with be carrying out a second survey to determine which font we will be using.
I have created a pie chart to make it clear what fonts were the most popular with the audience.

Poster Template

From looking at other posters of horror films we have decided to create our poster with similar conventions to them. By using these conventions it will make our poster look more professional and less unorganized. We have decided to make the poster with as little writing as possible so there will be more focus on the image. The writing on our trailer will include a slogan, the title of our trailer, the release date and at the very bottom they will be the company and the classification. by making it simple it will attract the audiences attention and i a quick glance they will have everything the need to know.

Analising 3 Magazine Covers

In this post I will be analyzing the conventions of film magazine covers, unfortunately while researching horror film magazine covers I have not been able to find three so I will be analyzing another genre to add to my research of the ideas of the conventions of a film magazine.

This is a magazine cover for the sixth Harry Potter film The Half Blood Prince. On this front cover they have used short punchy text so that the audience get some information of what is included in the magazine without there being loads of information to read this entices the audience to buy this magazine as allows you to see if you would like to read the magazine before you have read it. They have used a big picture of the latest most talked about film out at that time so that the audience are getting new and exciting information on this latest release, they have also included sell lines about the film to get the audience an idea of what they are going to be talking about before they have even bought the magazine, and gives the reader the chance to decide whether they are interested in the magazine and its contents. The title over the magazine has been made red so that it stands out against the dark and gloomy background this allows the audience to see the title of the magazine clearly and easily. They have also included an edited picture on three film characters into one picture, giving the audience an idea of what else is going to be included within the magazine. Also within the sell lines they have included a list of all the films that have been included in the magazine.

This is a magazine front cover for the horror magazine Scream. This magazine has a lot of the typical conventions of a magazine front cover as they have included the barcode and the bottom right hand corner, sell lines on both sides of the magazine, a puff at the top right hand corner with the issue number and price of the magazine and they have also got a slogan for the magazine 'blood, guts, gore and more!' the affect of the magazine including these things are that they have made it look professional and sell able. The Masthead of the magazine is a typical for a horror as it looks like blood dripping from it. They have used a main image on their cover giving it a focus point, also making the audience draw its eyes towards the ghostly eyes in the main image. They have also have a 'PLUS!' at the bottom of the page, making the reader interested in the little paragraph at the bottom of the page. Within the sell lines there are two interviews, one with and actress and one a director, by including these on the front of the magazine, for a reader that is looking for a specific interview they could have found it by looking at the sell lines of this magazine.

Magazine Title Fonts

These are the fonts we have chosen as a possibility for our magazine front cover. We are currently conducting a poll on which one people prefer, I will be posting the results of the poll later on when it has ended. We decided one these different fonts from our preferences.

Adobe Premiere Pro

This is a print screen showing us, playing around with some of our clips and figuring out what we are able to do with Premiere Pro. By doing this we are able to see where video effects are and how they work and respond to the footage. We are now starting to put different pieces of our footage together and see whether we will need to redo any of the shots we have already done. After looking at most of our footage a lot of it is quite dark and we have tried to lighten it on Premiere Pro and we have come to the conclusion its still too dark so we will have to be redoing a couple of the shots.

Video Footage

In this post there is all of the video footage that we took on our first shoot, there will be another post soon with the rest of the footage in which we may or may not be using.

Green Band Rating Card

At the start of our trailer we will be inserting a green band rating card at the start of our trailer so the viewer knows the appropriate audiences in which the trailer has been created for. All trailers have to include a classification in which the trailer is and what it entails for example strong language and brief nudity. We are going to use this to indicate to the audince that our trailer is a rating 15.

This is the Green Band Rating card that we will be using;

We decided to use this green band rating card to make our trailer look more sophisticated and professional. We have also used to so we follow the usual conventions of a trailer.

Producer Logo

We have decided to add a producer logo at the start of our teaser trailer to make the trailer look more realistic and processional. We have decided to create our own producer logo and name as we are unable to use other companies due to copy right. We have used two different images for Google images and placed them together to make our own unique logo. The two images are;

After deciding to use these two images we was able to come up with this as our final logo;

We will be digitally tracing this image on to my computer using a graphics tablet. They we will be able to add this to the start of our teaser trailer, to increase the professionalism of our trailer.

Magazine Mock Up

Actors

In our film trailer we will be using a couple of actors, these are;

Rebecca Davis

We have decided to use Rebecca as she meets the criteria of height and type of person to do our acting. It is also easier as she lives close to Abbie and I.

Due to the three of us not having a lot of free time at the same time we have decided to change our main character to Kayley Saint-Clair. We have chosen Kayley due to the fact that she lives close by, she meets the requirements of the type of actress that we need for our trailer as she is the right height and build.

Shot Types

Within our trailer we are planing to use different shot types to provide variety within our overall trailer. If we use the shot types correcting we will be able to influence the viewers emotions and make them feel empathy for the vunerable character. We will also be using the following different shot types so that the trailer doesn't get boring from the use of the same shot consantly and move it around to keep the viewer interested.

The shot types we are planing to use are;
Long shot
Close up
Over the shoulder shot
Paning shot
Establising shot
Mid shot
High angle shot
Low angle shot
Point of view shot
Extreme close up
Zooming
Tracking Shot

We will also be using the rule of thirds to help give us guidance of where to place our objects and people.

Target Audience

Our target audience is from 15 upwards, for the research we have conducted a questionnaire. By asking them the following questions we are able to see what the audience want and expect from scary films, from this we are able to collect the information and incorporate it into our trailer. It will help influence the trailer and make it better.

In this questionnaire we have asked a range of questions from "does the sound effect your emotions?" to "What do you prefer in a trailer.. -very little revealed -best parts shown -cliffhanger" to get the audiences opinion on what they would like to see in a trailer so we as the producer know what to include to make the trailer successful.

In this question we have asked people what they like to see in trailers and a lot more people would rather have cliffhangers making you then want to go and see the film than see all the best bits as it ruins the film when you actually go and see the film.

In this question we have then asked whether the sound of the trailer effects your emotion, from this we have found out that sound effects the viewers feelings and emotions while watching the trailer.

By finding out these different pieces of information we are then able to incorperate it into our trailer, so then we are able to reach the expectations of the viewer.

Trailer Ideas

We have come up with a few different ideas for our final teaser trailer we will be picking one of these for our final idea and I will be making a mock up story board of how the trailer is going to be set out, this will be a rough idea of how it is going to look and we will be making small changes while we are filming and when it comes to where then place will be.

The first idea was that there was house party and these guys pick a group of girls and ask them if they would like some drinks, so they lead them down to the shed and the end of the garden where apparently "the drinks are" and when they are all inside and one of them has locked the door they spike their drinks so that they are unable to be aware of what they are doing, when they wake up they have no idea where they are and the guys torture them.

The second idea would be that there would be a girl and she goes to school but she gets bullied a lot for being quite and not having any friends, so as she is sitting in class she get a text at first she ignores it and tries to concentrate in lesson but then the three girls start picking on her so she reads the text that she got saying (meet me in the woods) from her odd and creepy boyfriend. Then the girl throw some paper at her and pushed her past the breaking point. Then she walks out the lesson and walks into Scadbury park, looking for her boyfriend and she starts hearing something moving though the woods towards her so she starts running and then she gets taken by someone, they tie her up in the basement of somewhere, and she is frantically trying to get out, and as she gets out she hears them coming from up stairs and the floor boards are creaking as they walk.

The third idea is that a family have just bought a new house and the parents decided to go away for the weekend and leave their child of around 6 years old and they hire a nanny for the two days and while they are away paranormal activities occur. The baby sitter sets up a camera and finds that someone is causing the activities and discovers that he has the parents as well as them two trapped.

We have chosen to do the second idea as when we thought about it we realized that the other ones are typical scary film plot lines and they have already been done and our other one hasn't been done.
I have made a story board of how the trailer will go, this isn't definite as we may come across complications, or may change our minds of how we would like the trailer to be.

Location

This is a selection of locations that we maybe use within our teaser trailer.

Scadbury Park (Moated Manor)

These are pictures by the Scadbury Park Moated Manor, we will be using this location during our trailer as the main location of the trailer. With this location we would have to wait until it was dark to give the shot effect and mystery within the shot.

Forested Area Within Scadbury

These are pictures from a forested area in the Scadbury park area we may be using this location for a part of our trailer as it has a good lighting as the trees let though little light so we are still able to shot the scene even if it is quite light. It allows us to shot the scenes at different times during the day and we would have to rush the scene and get good quality shot. The mise en scene will make it hard to get the shot right as it is a natural forest area and we will be unable to move certain aspects of the shot.

Woolwich Church

These are pictures from Woolwich Church, we are using this place because it has a creepy atmosphere and look to it, lighting will not be an issue as we will be able to add as much light as needed as there aren't any windows to counteract the light we are adding into the space. We are able to correct the mise en scene within this space due to any things withing the area are able to be moved around and arranged to how we would want them. There are cobwebs and dirt within the church basemant making it look creepy and old, by using this dirt it makes it seem more realistic. There are certain characterics which makes the place ideal for our horror trailer.

Abbie's Shed
These are pictures from Abbie's shed we could use this if we are unable to get the right shots within the Church, if we was to use this area we would have to wait until it is dark to get the right lighting due to a window. After it is dark we are able to add any lights to make the lighting right for the shot, we are able to move any items out of the camera shot to correct the mise en scene.

Analysing 3 Film Posters

In this post I will be analysing 3 different horror film posters. By doing this it will inspire me on how to layout my poster and what to include on it. I will also be writing about the use of colour, text and the links between them. This will allow me to see the effectiveness of all of these aspects within a film poster.
This is a film poster for Scream 4. On this poster they haven’t used many different colours they have mainly just used shades, is it effective as straight away you can tell that it is a horror film through this. The white that they have used contrasts the black background showing that the mask is pure but not innocent, they have used the mask on this poster as it is well known and is directly linked with the scream films. The bottom of the mask is shaped like a knife showing that this may be a significant weapon to this film. They haven’t included much text on this poster this is affective as they have left the film a mystery and just included a quote, the film title, and the date of release. They have switched the A in the title to a 4 instead of having it at the end of the title. The colour of the 4 is bright red, the way they have used it clever as even though it looks like blood its really clean. The release date of the film is on the 4th linking the release date and the film title. They have used iconography through the use of a mask this connotes mystery and fear, it also dehumanises the killer this implies that they have no emotion or feeling, these masks are sometimes used as a narrative device. By using the quote 'New Decade, New Rules.' this has the immpression that there is going to be change in storyline.

This is a film poster for Nightmare on Elm Street. On this poster the main colours are red, orange and yellow, these influence the viewer as it makes them feel fear and danger. Like the Scream 4 poster there isn’t a lot of writing on this poster this is because the main emphasis is on the image in which they have put on the poster. The only writing on the poster is a quote, the film title and the release date of the film. The title writing is in red which symbolises blood or danger. The quote ‘He knows where you sleep’ implies that the film is about someone’s dreams; this allows the viewer to know about the film before they have even seen it. The use of the two actors connotes that the film will be focused around two main people with in the plot. The way that the person in the back of the poster is standing is suggesting that he is watching over her, the peso in the front is lower than the person in the back an only showing half of her body, she is also mainly dark colours making her look dead. There is light shining off of the knife looking objects connected to the guys hands, by having the light reflecting off of them makes them more visible to the audience they reason they have done this is because they may be of some significance to the film.

This is a film poster for final destination. On this poster the main colours are black and light grey with a small bit of red. These are the main colours on a horror film poster this is because it is the main iconography of horror film. Like the other film posters there is very little writing this allows the viewer to focus on the image more than the writing on the poster. They have used three pieces of writing on the poster these are the title, date of release and quote. The quote is ‘Rest in pieces’ this corresponds with the picture as it looks like a broken mirror, with a skull behind. The writing is in red, drawing the viewers’ attention to the date as it stands out. By the date just being August it leaves the audience in suspense. The background is a very smoky grey and dark implying that the film is dark and eerie. The editing used on this poster is very good how they have intertwined to images and also making it look like a mirror shattered as she is screaming. They have matched up her face and the skull really well, they also made it look like the skull was screaming too, adding effect to the poster. There is a spot on the mirror making it look like has been broken with some kind weapon. They have also made her look like a skull and that she is lifeless as they have blacked out her eyes making it look like she has no emotion.

Genres

These are a few of the genres in which I could use for my teaser trailer. By doing this research it has allowed me you see what different genres there are and what one I could choose for my teaser trailer. By looking at these I have decided to stick with horror as my genre for my teaser trailer as I think it would be the one that most interests me.

Analysing 3 Teaser Trailers

In this post I will be analysing three different teaser trailers within the genre horror, I will be focusing on mise en scene, location and camera angles. This will help inspire me on a storyline and it will help me to look for ideas of what to include within my teaser trailer.

 This is a trailer of Dark Hollows. It is a 54 second long trailer. This gives the audience small snippets of the film and intrigues the viewer to go and watch the film in cinema. In this trailer they have only used non-diegetic sound; it is very high pitched which sounds mystical, then changing into a slower paced while increasing pace as the scene goes on. There is a deeper pitched music at 21 seconds after a roaring sound making it sound haunting and scary. Both of these sounds create an edgy atmosphere. there is no dialogue within the trailer which creates mystery. The location of the trailer is in two places the first on is a field where it is very bright and somewhat summery and warm, and the second location is in a forest where the lighting is dark and connotes a cold feeling this shows contrast, both locations are deserted creating a sense of vulnerability for the girl within the trailer, this has inspired me to use a deserted location where I can create an eerie atmosphere. The lighting has shown me how significant it is in creating a particular feel. The camera work is similar and simple the whole way through the trailer. They have used the same shot angle throughout the trailer and they is no variety in height but they have used different variations of close up shots and they have also used a tracking shot as they are following/walking through the forest. It starts at a fast pace but it slows down as they slow down in the forest. At the end of the trailer there isn't a date telling you when the film is going to be realised so it leaves to watchers in suspense.

This is a trailer of sinister. It is 46 seconds long. At the start of the trailer there is a voice over explaining the origin of the story, I feel that this is good for the trailer as the viewer’s get an insight to the storyline before the trailer has even begun. In this trailer they both diegetic and non-diegetic sound. They have used this to their advantage as they over lapped both music and dialogue to create tension and suspense. The non-diegetic sound has the power to change your emotions within seconds the non-diegetic sound cuts over sharply. The diegetic sound consists mainly of children talking to each other; this adds an aspect of creepiness as children are used in many scary films to add the element of scariness. The location of this trailer is set in a house it is only within the one place showing that the house is somewhat significant to the storyline. There is no variation of place within this trailer this has a good effect on the audience as it has consistency and allows the viewer to be drawn into the trailer. There is hand held footage allowing it to seem realistic as they look like old home movies from the killers point of view, giving it an authentic feel. Most of the camera shots used are mid shots with a few zooms and close ups, this allows the viewer to see enough  of the shot but not giving too much away.

This is a trailer for The Pact, it is 1 minute 52 seconds long this is quite long for a teaser trailer so we will be making one a bit shorter. In this trailer they use text to explain the story and there is also text on reviews explain how it made them feel, for example 'nail bitingly scary'. In this trailer they use both diegetic and non-diegetic sound, they use non-diegetic sound to incorporate glitches into the trailer this is effective as it allows them to add snippets of different parts of the film, it also adds a sense of tension, the diegetic sound at the beginning is mainly the young girl talking some films use this as children are portrayed as innocent and when they see something creepy they will tell someone as the believe what they see is true, this adds the element of creepiness to the trailer. The rest of the diegetic sound is adults talking and there is a part where there is screaming which adds an atmosphere to the trailer. The location is continuous throughout the whole of the trailer implying the house has some significance to what has been having within the trailer. There is one scene where she is riding a motorbike but that has no significance to the trailer, by using only one location this add an element of scariness whenever you next see that house. All of the camera shots have been done by using a tripod. There is a tracking shot as she is walking through the house at the beginning, there are close ups on significant things that are happening throughout the trailer these include door handles and the ouija, these imply that these objects mean something to the story, they use a mixture of low and high angles which this trailer, they also use panning shots withing this trailer.

Brief

After reading through all of the briefs and thinking through all my choices I have chosen to do, the film trailer and for this I must produce for my main task;
Ø A promotion package for a new film
Ø A teaser trailer

And for my ancillary tasks I have chosen to create;
Ø A Film Magazine Front Cover
Ø A poster for the film

I have chosen to work with Abbie Boorman, as we have known each other for 6 years, so we know that each other are reliable and will not slack while completing the task. We have decided to choose horror as our genre for the tasks as we both have good ideas for this genre like mise en scene and shot ideas.

I have chosen to do this task as after the music magazine task I decided I would like a change and explore different aspects of media products. An I would like to look into different editing software’s and like to learn different skills and I am still able to use skills I learnt from the previous project.

Guide To Research

Research – “The systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions.”

Primary research involves collecting data first hand so it is not collected from the internet or books. It can be collected in many different forms, the main ones being interviewed, questionnaires, panels and observation.

Secondary research involves collecting data which already exists and not collecting it yourself. This includes getting and using information from reports, publications, and internet research and company files.

The six key steps to research are;
§  Identify
§  Produce
§  Collect
§  Analyse
§  Review
§  Present

Another advantage of internet research is that the information you find is up to date and frequently updated, saves time as you can just simply enter the text you want into a search engine, instead of looking it up in a book. You can always get straight forward answer and not loads of useless information.

Sources;
Internet: Can help me research into already existing products that have relevance with my project giving me help and guidance and examples to follow while completing my project.
Books: I can look into books into history of the brief I have chosen to educate me and give me ideas about my project.
Magazines: Again look into already existing and current ideas to give me ideas for posters.
Newspaper: I can look into reviews of trailers and other videos and then use them as examples.
Libraries: Plenty of books with information that can help me and influence me and give me ideas.
Surveys: I can survey people and get an idea about what the audience want to see and want from their media and I can take their ideas and preferences and use them in my project.
